Great points Richard and I've corrected the spelling error on Ubunto. Guess it's not in the spell check directory yet, LOL.

Personally I think the future will have Linux dominating the desktop but not in its current form. I can see a time when web appliances will be the choice for the average consumer to access web-based applications. Of course at that time the actual operating system will be transparant to the end user.

You won't be hearing from any average user on this blog. They have a few specific sites they visit and very few blogs. Think MySpace, Facebook, ebay and whatever porn sites there are out there. You would not consider me an average user either but from my visits to hundreds of blogs, mostly negative towards Linux, I have seen only a small percentage of users reporting that Linux just didn't do it for them. Many are similar to Dan Swatik's comment above. Also, the numbers don't support your conclusion. The latest from Gartner is a 2.0% market share for Linux. That number has only grown from the very beginning. Yes, there have been times of speedier growth like in 2003, but always growth. "But at that rate it will take Linux until 2055 to conquer the desktop". For that to happen some laws of mathematics would need to be broken. If Linux usage continues to grow, it will reach some magical point where the rest of the "dominoes" will fall. At that point it won't make any sense for a company or individual to stay locked in to Microsoft.

Now this is hard to say without sounding critical, but if you want to be taken seriously when talking about Linux, either for or against, then you need to get the names right. It's Ubuntu, not "Ubanto".

But you kind of support my point then. You're not just joe-average computer user looking to get away from Microsoft. You're a developer so your in a position to make it work the way you want it to work. There's plenty of geeks out their running obscure operating systems who will swear that what they have is superior to all. And for them, the statements probably true.

Well I been running Ubuntu on my desktop since 7.10 came out, and haven't switched back to XP, now I run XP via a Virtual Machine, just because I use development stuff that is specifically only Windows.. But eventually I will be porting all that over to the Mono Project (Linux version of Microsoft's Dot Net Framework)
